Global Studies Conference at Humboldt University, Berlin.

Global Studies Conference at Humboldt University, Berlin.

Representatives from JNU, UCT, Chulalongkorn, and FLACSO met in Berlin for a two day workshop May 25 & 26. The workshop was attended by some of the original participants who founded the Global Studies Programme more than a decade ago, as well as more recent participants.

It was a great opportunity to discuss the GSP curriculum and research. There was agreement that the program should be geared toward imagining and creating sustainable and equitable alternative futures. To this end there was renewed commitment to emphasize the research component of the program, and the research agenda will be outlined in special issues of Transcience in the near future. Eight research clusters were identified: migration, sustainability, inequality, governance and alternative futures, social movements and civil society, health and vulnerability, emerging knowledge perspectives, twenty-first century urbanization.

Finally, all partners agreed on the inauguration of a PhD programme as a continuation of the MA. It is projected to start in 2014. Students will write their thesis within one of the eight research clusters of the Global Studies Programme.
